Acid Free Coffee For Acid Reflux
So, you've switched to decaf coffee and aren't enjoying it as much, but you think you are doing something good for your GERD. Based on a recent University of Florida study reported on in the October, 2006 Journal of Analytical Toxicology, you may be wrong. Co-authored by Bruce Goldberger, Ph.D., professor and director of UF's William R. Maples Center for Forensic Medicine, and Mark F. Gold, M.D., a professor of psychiatry, neuroscience and community health and family medicine at UF, the study reports that 5 - 10 cups of decaffeinated coffee could easily reach the caffeine level in a cup of caffeinated coffee. Many coffees were tested; only Folgers Coffee Crystals had no caffeine; the others contained anywhere from 8.6 milligrams to 13.9 milligrams of caffeine. Sixteen ounces of regular brewed coffee contains about 170 milligrams of caffeine. The researchers also analyzed 12 different samples of Starbucks decaf espresso and brewed decaf. The espresso had anywhere from 3 - 15.8 mg of caffeine while the brewed coffee had from 12 - 13.4 mg per 16 ounces.
The news isn't all bad. A company in San Francisco, The DeCaf Company, has developed a device that allows you to remove most of the caffeine from your coffee with a stir. CEO Mel Stuckey claims that his product, which looks like a tongue depressor, "doesn't alter the taste, character, or aroma: - it just removes caffeine". Not yet on the market, Stuckey says they are looking to license the technology since his company doesn't have the ability to raise the needed capital. A perfect opportunity for an angel investor!
I've discovered a great tasting coffee that is available with or without the jolt and it is acid free. We've tried it; it tastes great and both my husband and I can definitely feel the difference when consuming less acid. It is available from www.hevlacoffeeco.com.
