* DON'T DRINK ANY LIQUIDS WITH MEALS: The stomach is a vessel containing acid for digestion; when it becomes full and overflows this acid can reflux or go up the esophagus - the recommendation is to eat small meals more frequently and to drink between meals; * SLEEP ON YOUR LEFT SIDE ' the esophagus enters the stomach at a slight angle on the right; therefore, you get better use of gravity if you sleep on your left side; * CHEW GUM ' the saliva created when you chew gum seems to help reduce acid production. As always, everything doesn't work for everyone but these suggestions may be worth a try.
Former Vice President Al Gore's book and oscar winning documentary An Inconvenient Truth exposes the problems of global warming and makes us more aware of our environment's effect on our lives. Pick up a newspaper or check news online and you are likely to see articles pointing out the health risks of air pollution.
The risks, especially of cardiovascular disease, seem to be greater for women. An article in the February 1, 2007, The New England Journal of Medicine by Douglas W. Dockery, Sc.D., and Peter H. Stone, M.D., offers some explanations. Dr. Dockery, Professor of Environmental Epidemiology at the Harvard School of Public Health, and Dr. Stone, a cardiologist who is co-director of the Cardiac Care Unit at Brigham and Women's Hospital, a teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School, reported on data from the Women's Health Initiative observational study and other studies. It appears that fine particulate air pollution has a greater effect on women because we women have a profile of coronary disease that distinctly differs from that of men. Our coronary arteries are smaller and our microvessels appear to be more dysfunctional than those of men. Nevertheless, pollution affects everyone. Based on these studies, the goal is to reduce cardiovascular disease attributable to air pollution.
One way to protect yourself from pollutants while helping your GERD is to sleep on the MedSlant with the allergen barrier, dust mite proof cover. Fabric is considered to be allergen barrier if the pore size is less than 10 microns. Pore size is the measurement of the space created by weaving the threads to make the fabric. It is measured in microns. To be considered truly allergen barrier, fabric pore size must be less than 10 microns; the fabric we use has a pore size of less than 4 microns. But, remember that your head is on your own pillow. To totally protect yourself, you should have an allergen barrier protector on your own pillow. We sell them as a convenience; you can also buy them from most mass merchants, Target, WalMart, Bed, Bath and Beyond etc. and many online sources.
