Medslant Acid Reflux Newsletter
Continued evidence is on chronic sinusitis and GERD.
Jordan S. Josephson, M.D., board certified Director of the New York Nasal and Sinus Center is an internationally renowned nasal and endoscopic sinus surgeon. In 2004 he was selected as one of New York Magazine s Best Doctors . Although he specializes in functional nasal and endoscopic sinus surgery, Dr. Josephson treats a significant number of patients for sleep apnea, snoring and voice problems.Dr. Josephson's new book, Sinus Relief Now, provides information and helpful suggestions on controlling sinusitis. By definition the sinuses are hollow spaces in the facial bones surrounding the nose. Each sinus' job is to catch bacteria and other particles, move it to the back of the nose and down the throat into the stomach to be destroyed and excreted. If the sinuses become inflamed by allergy or infection, the tissues swell, closing the airflow and making breathing through the nose difficult. Sometimes, the symptoms of GERD can mimic those of sinusitis. The feeling of needing to clear your throat constantly may be a symptom of either or both. Heartburn or acid reflux can actually contribute to sinusitis ' while lying down acid can travel up to the sinuses. The infection and/or inflammation associated with sinusitis can spread to the digestive system causing many health problems including sleep apnea, snoring, and other digestive disorders.
The best treatment options according to Dr. Josephson are those you would use to treat a cold ' lots of fluids and plenty of rest. OTC decongestants may be used but because of their stimulant effects Dr. Josephson suggests seeing a physician if you are using them for more than two days. Other suggestions include controlling your environment by minimizing dust, irritants, and mold exposure.
As always, the best advice it to consult a physician. In addition to seeing a gastroenterologist, you may need to see an otolaryngologist.
